There are many famous people who hale/d from Minnesota. They come from all walks of life and the list is surprising. Celebrities, from politicians to entertainers, authors to wealthy people, sports to singers. Minnesota is not "left out in the cold," so to speak with its fair share of famous people.
Here is a partial list of prominent people from Minnesota. Some are deceased and some are still with us, however all are well-known.
Roger Maris (1934-1985) Roger Maris was born in Hibbling, Minnesota and his claim to fame is that he made history by hitting an incredible 61 home runs in one single season while playing baseball for the New York Yankees.
Eugene McCarthy (1916- United States Senator McCarthy was born in Watkins, Minnesota. What most folks aren't aware of is Sen. McCarthy is also a professor, poet and author.
Charles Schulz (1922-2000) The creator of cartoon characters Charlie Brown and Peanuts. Mr. Schulz was born in Minneapolis. His characters began as comic strip and then became even more famous through televison, entertaining millions.
J. Paul Getty (1892-1976) Mr. Getty was born in Minneapolis and was considered the most wealthiest man in the entire world when he passed away.
The Andrew Sisters, better known as Patti, Maxine and Laverne were born in Minneapolis. The world-famous singing sisters entertained the United States troops and helped keep the soldiers spirits high during World War 2. One of their most famous songs is "Boggie Woggie Bugle Boy From Company B."
Richard W. Sears (1889-1981) Mr. Sears was born in Stewardville, Minnesota. It is rumored this man began his career selling umbrellas on a street corner. True or not, Mr. Sears is the founder of Sears and Roebuck. Sears is still very much in business today and, sells much more than umbrellas.
Judy Garland (1922-1969) Ms. Garland was known as Frances Gumm when she was born in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. Ms. Garland is a world-renowned singer, but perhaps most famous of all, she is remembered as Dorothy Gale from the famous, familyoriented movie, The Wizard of Oz.
Charles Bender (1883-1954) Charles Bender was born in Crow Wing County, Minneapolis and he was the very first baseball pitcher to win six World Series games.
Sinclair Lewis (1885-1951) Sinclair Lewis was born in Sauk Creek, Minneapolis. Mr. Lewis was a famous American novelist and he was the first American who won the Nobel Prize for Literature. Many of his works include writing about small town life. He was also a playwright. One of his ficitional towns was called Gopher Prairie, Minnesota.
Winona Ryder (1971- Can you guess where Ms. Ryder was born? Her parents named her after the town she was born in, Winona! She is a beautiful actress and has starred in movies such as The Crucible and The Age of Innocence and it appears she will continue to make more entertaining movies.
