Poetry: Meaning of life

I attended the cremation
next to the railway station
near the center of town

"The Convict Hanged 'Till Dead"
is what the headline read;
"body to be burned at sundown."

The corpse was on fire
and the prolific town-crier
was unable to utter a sound

A crowd of people came
many had seen him hanged
their heads hung toward the ground

Many attendees drifted away
but I decided I would stay
'til powdered bone fell to the ground

Then I stood alone
wind-chilled to the bone
with sadness deep and quite profound

Did this man's life exist
with both despair and bliss
to end up as this ashen mound

I stayed throughout the night
until the morning light
when no burnt ash or bone was found

Then the scorching sun
signaled my vigil done
and I was stunned by coldness all around
