Magic the Gathering card analysis: Mad Auntie

Goblins are not a tribe of large creatures and while there are certainly advantages to this there are of course problems too, mostly that as a game goes on they become continually outclassed by the opponent's creatures which are considerably larger. That is unless you are able to play cards that make your inexpensive goblins bigger and more resilient.

Mad Auntie is a rare goblin shaman from the Lorwyn expansion set of magic the gathering. She is a 2/2 creature that costs one black and two colorless and gives all other goblins +1/+1.

Giving a tribe +1/+1 is something that quite a number of creatures do and it can become something that people do not think all that much of. After all how good can it be if there are three or four cards in a single tribe that will do it, but the truth is that it is actually quite a useful ability. To recognize this you have to look at the difference in value of a 1/1 creature for one mana and a 2/2 creature because while it may be easier for your opponent to turn them all back into 1/1 creatures so long as the mad auntie is on the board that is in essence what you are getting.

Also of value is the understanding that there is no reason that you can not use more than one of the cards that gives a bonus to goblins. And if they begin to add up you can suddenly find yourself with goblins that are large enough to actually challenge the larger green creatures that your opponent puts out.

This is not the only ability that Mad Auntie has though and the second is almost as important. This ability requires only that Mad Auntie tap, and it allows her to regenerate any goblin except herself. This may seem reasonably unimportant since no single goblin is generally all that useful, but as this is a card that you are likely not going to be attacking with because of th importance of the other ability it makes it far more valuable. You can chump block with the same creature every turn, or keep your number from dwindling as you attack.

If you enjoy goblins and want to make the small quick tribe just a little more dangerous late in the game then in many ways this is a better card that the previous choices with its only real weakness being that it pushes you into black.
