Book Review of Denial by Stuart M. Kaminsky
This book took awhile for me to read because I had some trouble getting into it. However, I kept reading to see what would happen with Lew Fonesca and the cases he was investigating. He had two cases that he needed to solve. One case was about a hit-and-run driver who killed a fourteen-year-old boy, and the other case was about a woman named Dorothy Cgnozic who told Lew about a murder in Seaside Assisted Living Facility where she lived.
Lew Fonesca was the main character. Nancy Root was in Lew Fonesca's office. She wanted him to help her locate the hit and run driver who killed her son. He agreed to help her, but he didn't know that he was in danger, too.
Dorothy Cgnozic called Lew and told him about a woman who was murdered in the assisted living place where she lived. She wanted him to investigate the murder. She told one of the nurses, but when the nurse looked into the room, she couldn't see anyone.
Later on, Lew and Ames went to visit Dorothy, but before he could see her, he was called into Amos Trent's office. Amos Trent was the director. After they talked, Lew wanted to see Dorothy.
After Lew and Ames left the assisted living building, they talked about meeting at a Mexican restaurant in the middle of the morning. While they ate, Lew talked about the hit and run incident. Arnoldo Robles saw the hit and run driver, so Lew and Ames questioned him.
Lew left and saw a car approaching him very quickly and hit him as he attempted to dash over the car. He stood up as fast as he could. He brushed himself off and picked up his car keys. After that, he drove away.
Later on, Ames and Lew drove to Seaside Assisted Living Facility, so they could break in and see what was happening inside. They climbed in through a window and entered a room to search for some files they wanted, but someone opened the door.
They stood stiff and wondered who entered the room. They didn't want anyone to find out what they were doing. They were somewhat relieved when they saw a resident with a walker. The elderly man chatted with them for a few minutes, and then he helped them leave. They quickly climbed through a window and walked carefully so they wouldn't arouse the gator that was outside. The gator belonged to one of the elderly women who lived in the assisted living facility. She left the gator near her window, and then at night, she feeds him.
Ames and Lew escaped the scene of their crime, and Lew took Ames to his destination before he drove to his office and room where he lived. Lew got ready for bed and hoped to go to sleep soon. It was going to be a short night because they pulled off their crime in the middle of the night.
Now, you'll have to read the book to find out what happened, and how Lew solved the cases.
As I mentioned earlier, I was confused about the plot, but I continued reading the book, and I became more involved with the characters and the plot. I wanted to find out what happened with the characters and who hit the boy. I also wanted to find out what happened in the nursing facility and why the murder the woman saw was kept a secret. I wondered if something shady was going on with the director and the staff.
