While electricity may be higher in cost than gas in most areas, the use of an electric furnace can have many benefits for the homeowner. When considering a change to, or from, an electric furnace weigh all the benefits before making your final decision. The more knowledge you have, the better you will feel about your choice in heating systems.

Safety:

With an electric furnace, you do not need to worry about gas or oil leaks. There is no chance of a gas explosion occurring. Electric furnaces do not produce dangerous gases and the home owner does not need to worry about carbon monoxide. There is less risk of fire with an electric furnace as there is no fire contained inside the furnace. The homeowner only needs to keep the area around the furnace clear to the distance recommended by the manufacturer. Electric furnaces do not have fuel storage tanks to worry about in the event of leakage.

Cleanliness:

Electric furnaces run more cleanly than gas, oil or wood burning systems. Less cleaning and maintenance is required. Regular filter replacement and duct cleaning will keep an electric furnace in good shape.

Comfort levels:

The heat produced by an electric furnace does not remove as much moisture from the air as other types of furnaces. Electric furnaces are not as drying and therefore a humidifier is not likely needed to maintain comfort levels.

Actual furnace cost:

The actual cost of a new electric furnace is usually less than the cost of comparable gas furnace. The installation costs may be less as well. As long as the home has a suitable electric system, major changes should not have to be made. An electric furnace takes up less space than other types of furnaces so major remodeling would not need to be done in a home with less space available. In addition, electrical furnaces have a longer life expectancy.

Electric furnaces can be more efficient overall:

While electricity may be more expensive than gas or oil supplies, electric furnaces are more efficient in general. Since there are no gases that need to be vented, more heat is retained in the home. Newer furnaces are also designed with better electrical efficiency in mind.

Availability of "fuel" sources:

Electricity is available in almost all areas, all around the world. In rural areas, out of the way places or less developed nations, natural gas may not be available. The ability to have propane or oil delivered may not be possible.

Possible solar conversion:

It is possible to convert to a solar electrical system. The costs of a solar system, with the energy to power an electric furnace, would not be inexpensive but for those looking to get away from the use of manufactured electricity or those wanting to "go green", it is an option.

Electric furnaces will tend to be more efficient to use in areas that are not subject to extreme cold. Learn as much as you can about your furnace choices and weigh your decision carefully. You should be happy with your heating system and it is a long term investment.
