How to build up your writing portfolio

It all starts with a goal of complete abandon. Ideas come and go in an instant, so you have to latch onto them when the moment is ripe, scribbling them on a crumpled piece of paper, interrupting your current project in mid-sentence to type them in a note on your desktop. Everything that goes in and out of your mind can be turned into an article if you really think about it. And once you begin to really think about it, your mind will probably become quite overwhelmed. Enter the release factor, as you jot those ideas down, sending them directly from your subconscious mind and managing them in concrete form for future use.

Building up your portfolio can take as long or as short a time as you want it to. There are different types of writers, after all, and not all of them can construe sentences into articles on a moment's notice. Some need to read and research very thoroughly before committing any words to paper. They have to process everything very carefully, selecting only the choicest words for their work, proudly claiming each piece they write as a masterpiece requiring skill, and therefore lots of time.

Other writers like to tell stories about anything. They will write about what they know fairly quickly, and then take the necessary steps to back it up with facts. Their work is produced much faster than those who labor intensively over each and every word. Finally, there are those writers who just write. They throw the words out on paper as if their very lives depended on it, and sometimes they do if selling those same words makes a difference in whether or not they have proper food and shelter.

The ideal way to build up your portfolio as a writer is to be a composite of all three above mentioned writers. Dream about your masterpiece, and take as long as you need to write it, even if that takes most of your entire life. Tell your stories, and learn about new things so you can continue sharing everything you know with whoever wants to be captured by your amazing talents as a writer. Finally, just write, and do it non-stop if for no other reason than to prove that you can.

Challenge yourself and set goals. How many articles can you produce in a day without doing an internet search? How many titles can you use to write about the same topic? What types of new articles can you write about that stem from ones you've already written about? Who are you and what do you do? What are your habits, tips for success, and pet peeves? Write about all of it and watch your portfolio grow as fast as your fingers can type them.
