Video game reviews: Championship Manager

Championship Manager, is a PC soccer management game series. Overall, since the original Championship manager was released, there have been a number of sequels and expansions to the game, which have taken the series up to Championship Manager 2008.

Overall, the basis for all the Championship Manager games has been to provide a soccer management game, which gives fans the chance to manage a football team or squad, transfer and select players, and set formations. Overall, with the games also including an increasing number of options for player training and scouting.

The first and original Championship Manager proved to be a hit. Even if it did have limited graphics, and had random players, the game showed potential. An expansion to Championship Manager One significantly enhanced the game design.

Since the original, the Championship Manager games have gone up to a Championship Manager 5. Then from Championship Manager 5 with further additions: Championship Manager 2006, 7 and most recently 2008 with up to eight games in total. However, some of these games also include seasonal updates.

All Championship Manager games provide a list of stats and ratings for soccer players in a number of attributes such as handling, finishing, passing, tackling, crossing, stamina, pace, determination etc. These ratings are on a scale of 1-20 with 20 being the absolute best possible rating for a player to have. The best players will have the highest rating values.

It is the game, or match engine, that actually varies most between the Championship Manager games. For the most part, the match engines are based on game commentary and stats for all the players. For example, in Championship Manager 3 there is text commentary, possession meters, game stats and also player ratings from 1-10 provided. However, from Championship Manager 4 the match engine has been updated, and further enhanced. A 2d-match engine was introduced for games, alongside commentary. Further versions of Championship Manager have added extra features.

While the original Champions Manager was the original, it was the sequels which took the game to a new level. It is difficult to say which is the best of the series, but some actually prefer the earlier games such as Championship Manager 3, which had a few updates. Overall, Championship Manager 3 and its updates get a top rating.

So overall, Championship Manager has generally been a great game series. For more on the game, the Championship Manager game site and community is certainly worth noting.
