On the minds of mankind

by D. Kearney Sparano

Well I suppose the more popular and expected answer to the question of what's on the minds of men? would be sex. I remember hearing a statistic once that a man on average thinks about sex once every 9 seconds, or something to that effect. Perhaps it was more or less, I am simply paraphrasing. Is it true that sex on the male mind, of course. The likelihood of sexual thinking increases depending on the situation/ the more attractive women around, the more a man will think of sex. It's not rocket science. The misconception (I believe) by both women and men, is that sex dominates the male mind. I doubt that and believe there is more on the minds of men.

Now I have particular data to back up any of my claims. I've done no research and interviewed no one. My opinions are based solely on my own thoughts and various discussions I have had with other men.

It has been said by many that a man's mind is one of problem solving. On this idea I do agree. For every problem there is a solution. On that track I would say much of what is on the minds of men is task and job oriented. Whether this is a professional/business task, a personal/family task or some form of emergency, men are typically in a problem solving mode. What needs to be done and how does it have to be done? I would say that these thoughts are common in many if not most men.

From that basis, thoughts could be broken down into categories. I am sure it would be no surprise to anyone in these times that money and finances are on the mind of men. The exact thought is different depending on the age and responsibility of each person. An adolescent is most likely concerned about how will he buy something? Some one out of college, like me, is concerned with paying back loans and beginning the adult phase of his life. Someone with a family is concerned with providing and someone retired is wondering about going back to work, most likely. Overall though I would say money, work and finances are definitely on the minds of men.

Now this is not the case of everyman, but certainly anyone that is worth a damn, care about his family and friends. Worrying about the health and safety of loved ones I am certain is common occurrence. I know that at any given moment either thoughts of my parents or friends can pop into my head. These thoughts can bleed into one another. For instance I may look at my parents and wonder if I am doing enough to help out financially at home. Another scenario could be that I am talking to a friend and promise to do a favor, which is now a task/problem I will need to do. As you can see nothing is really segregated into neat little categories. They all lead to each other.

Finally I would say that the previous topics are the important ones. Man though certainly can get caught up in the unimportant. Pop culture is definitely on the minds of men. You name it and any topic can pop into the male brain. They can be TV, politics, movies, sports magazines celebrities and so on. At any point we could be thinking the following, That was a great episode of House, damn Olivia Wilde is hot, too bad the World Series will interrupt the show, I hope the Yankees win, maybe Obama will throw out the frist pitch, he should be more forceful with the health care issue, oh Debbie's ultra sound is Thursday, better take off work so really what is on the minds of men: everything, anything, life!
