Video game reviews: Skyroad (DOS)

by Bruce Bostwick

Skyroad is a game that had been involved with a CD called Mega Games. It is one that may not get as much attention. There is no real story with the game and more like an Arcade in the sense of coming out with an objective. There are different tracks available. The shareware version of the game has just a couple tracks and that's about it. Basically, it is just one car completing a race or an objective to get to the end without fail.

The object of the game is to go from the beginning point to the end. There are various racetracks and you have to be sure to have all your fuel and of course plenty of oxygen. Without that, the game is over. Just simply get to the end with various obstacles that are involved without question. It is mostly an objective that is simple but depending upon the track of course, it can be very difficult. There are three per part ranging in difficulty or so it seemed. That is something that can be understood but can it be completed, that's another story. It is up to you to go out and race.

There are objects that have symbols of meaning. Anything that is a dark green or looks grayish will have to be considered slippery. There is one that can involve accelerating even faster and decelerating but that's just the way it is. In short, there are objects like that but you have to be smart. At the same time however, do not over think because that can cause making a mistake.

Graphically, the game is fine for the time and actually isn't bad. Sure, it looks like a bunch of shapes but that's just the way it is and nothing that can be considered ridiculous. Graphics were starting to get better and it did look somewhat 3D. In short, it is what it is in that respect.

The game play is simple enough to happen. Just use the space bar to jump when necessary and use the arrows to move in the right direction. The gravity varies depending upon the level so the jumps could be high or real low. It just depends and that is what makes it difficult. If anything, that can add to the challenge factor. The controls are responsive and it takes plenty of patience to master it. You can go back to the level anytime you want after completing it for more practice.

In terms of overall, it is a solid and enjoyable game. Is it a recommended game? Possibly in that respect that if you like those types of games, then by all means go for it. If you do a search for SkyRoads, there is a downloadable freeware game but probably would need DOS emulation in order to pull it off properly but it may or may not work with Vista. Without really testing every game possible on it, it is unknown. If that is the case, imagine what it would be for Windows 7 but that's another story.
