In the NBA Draft in June, the Timberwolves owned both the fifth and the sixth picks in the NBA Draft thanks to their sending Randy Foye and Mike Miller to the Washington Wizards. They used those picks to take Johnny Flynn and Ricky Rubio, prompting most NBA prognosticators to say... what are they doing? They took two point guards, which was certainly an unusual strategy.
However, nobody can deny that the Timberwolves do have some young guys with a lot of talent. Foremost among them is Al Jefferson, who they got back in the Kevin Garnett trade. He is one of the best low post scorers in the NBA, and a guy that many times you can pencil in for 20-10. In a league that is consistently moving towards the perimeter, Jefferson is one of the mainstays down low, making him a unique weapon for the Timberwolves.
The Timberwolves first round pick last year was Kevin Love, a guy that many people had questions about. He is not very athletic, and people had questions about his quickness both scoring on the offense end and especially on the defensive end. However, he proved many doubters wrong, posting a very solid rookie campaign. He averaged 11 points per game, and was one of the best rebounders in the NBA with over 9 per game. He is a very smart player. He knows his limitations, and has a great ability to play to his strengths. He is also a great passer for a big man, which helps out Al Jefferson in the post.
Johnny Flynn has the potential to be an excellent point guard for the Timberwolves. He is very athletic, and looks like an NFL RB. He is very quick and strong with the ball, and has the ability to get to the hole. His athleticism also allows him to be a very solid on-the-ball defender. He still has to improve the consistency on his outside shot, but there is no doubt that he has a ton of potential.
Ramon Sessions is a guy they picked up as a free agent this offseason from the Milwaukee Bucks. He is still relatively young, and has had a very productive career thus far. He is not a guy that hurts you from outside, but he has a solid all-around game. He should be another nice young piece for the Timberwolves.
So the Wolves are a ways away from being a playoff team, but they have some solid young pieces that should allow them to compete in a few years. If guys like Jefferson, Love, and Flynn can continue to develop, and David Kahn can continue to add some youngsters to the mix, the Wolves could trail only the Thunder in terms of young talent to build around.
