Niche websites are websites designed around a specific topic area in order to monetize the website using affiliate marketing and revenue programs such as ClickBank and Google Adsense. By focusing on a very small and very specific topic, proponents of niche website creation claim that a lot of revenue can potentially be generated by those owning multiple niche sites.
But what are the pros and cons of creating and launching niche websites? Before getting to work on niche website creation consider the pros and cons of this type of web business.
Some of the pros of niche websites:
Larger percentage of profits-
When you create websites on your own and load your affiliate marketing account links and Google Adsense information onto the website; you reap all of the revenue. Of course the affiliate site or company hosting the ads takes a small cut. Even with this small cut, you could potentially earn far more through this "direct" approach rather than using a third party content site to post your content who would also take a cut of your revenue.
Complete control-
You control the layout of your niche website. You decide where to place affiliate marketing links and ads. Navigation, graphics, content...you can control it all.
Outsourcing-
Many proponents of niche websites will tell you to outsource your work once you get a few websites up and running. This can mean getting outside writers to produce your website content, hiring someone to design a website, and even outsourcing promotion or link exchanges. All which can free up more time for you to create more niche websites or spend time doing what you love.
Some of the cons of niche websites:
Investment-
Unlike writing websites where you post content and the website takes care of the rest; creating niche websites mean that you have to start from the ground up. You'll need to purchase domain names and hosting service in addition to any part of the process that you want to outsource. Domain name registration and hosting can be cheap, but any amount you spend is still overhead.
Search engine placement and linking-
A niche website often starts from nothing, just a website out of billions on the internet. A savvy niche site maker will work hard to promote their website, research SEO and keyword techniques, and do everything they can to get their website in the first few pages of search results. But an established content website already has established thousands of links, advertising, and often has a staff that works on SEO. You are pretty much on your own with your niche websites when it comes to building links and establishing a web presence. Think of a popular writing site that may have tens of thousands of pages including many pages all related to each other with similar content and linked together.
For some writers and content creators, niche websites can be a fun and profitable way to make money on the internet. If you make it, you can earn far more per ad impression or pay per click ad than you usually will on third party content sites. For others, the concepts of SEO, keyword analytics, and creating new niche websites might not reap the big payoff some see.
Building profitable niche websites is doable but the choice to continue writing for large writing sites vs. going out on one's own is one of personal preference.
