A rectangle face appears narrow; because it is much longer then it is wide. If you'd like to make your face resemble a more oval shape, there are many ways to do so. The most common ways to achieve this are by making the right choices when it comes to your hairstyle, make up, neckline, accessories and eyebrow shape.

Hairstyle

Short, full hairstyles look fabulous on women with long faces. Think curls, waves and texture along the sides of the face. However, make sure you minimize the volume on top of your head, because you want to diminish the length of your face rather then add to it. If you have straight hair, consider getting lots of layers cut around the face, because they will help to frame your face and create shape. A thick, blunt fringe can really help enhance the visual width of your face. If you wish to part your hair make sure you stick to center parts, because side parts tend to have a narrowing effect.

Makeup

When you apply blush, try to apply it in a slightly horizontal manner across the cheeks rather than sweeping from your nose to your temples in a diagonal manner. You can also add some pretend width by applying a highlighting product down the sides of your face.

Neckline

If you have a rectangle face shape, you want to look for wide and shallow necklines because these help add to the appearance of width through the upper body region. Boat necks are the ultimate in widening this area, but high round necks and chunky turtlenecks can also be effective.

Accessories

Your accessories can also influence the appearance of your face, so make sure you also make wise choices in this department. For sunglasses or prescription frames look for styles that are curvy rather than angular. Also choose wide, thick frames like plastic styles, rather than thin wire styles. If possible find a pair that has wide arms that cut straight across at your temple region. This can really add visual width to your face. When it comes to hat, look for styles that feature wide brims, but fit snugly to the top of the head. You don't want to wear a hat that has volume at the crown, because this will further elongate the appearance of your face. Choose necklaces that are short in length like chokers and earrings that are wide like round hoops.

Eyebrow shape

Your face will look wider if you grow your eyebrows wide and flat. Let them grow out as far as they will towards the temples and only pluck stray hairs, rather than creating a high arch.

The more elements you work into your look, the higher the chances of deceiving the eye into thinking you have an oval shaped face.
