How to display Christmas villages

One of the prettiest Christmas decorations you can have in your home is a Christmas village. This is a miniature setting that usually shows a snowy Christmas scene with tiny houses, a church, shops and figures. Some Christmas villages have electric lights or candles inside that make them glow with warmth and good cheer. Obviously, if you have a Christmas village, you want to dosplay it to the best advantage over the holiday season.

The size of your Christmas village pieces will dictate the best way to display it it. If you have a true miniature village, you will need only to clear a space for it among your existing decor. But if you have a larger and more elaborate Christmas village, you may need to set up a table or alcove in which to display it.

One effective way to display your village is to clear a shelf, or space in the bookshelf. The items you usually have there can be packed away until the holidays are over, freeing up space to place your village in a prominent position. A deep recessed bookshelf offers lots of display options for your Christmas village. This is the ideal solution for a tiny village with small pieces.

A hall table, the top of a buffet or cupboard, fireplace mantles and even a deep windowsill are all solutions to display smaller Christmas villages. For a larger setting, however, you will need to plan something more elaborate. A table set in a window will allow a lit up village to be seen from outside, but you can also set up a temporary display surface with one or more foldaway card tables (depending on the size of your village), or use boxes or books stacked with a board on top. Cover with a bright red or green tablecloth. You can also keep the area under your Christmas tree clear for a charming spot to display your village.

When you have chosen your spot, you need to make a setting in which your village can shine. Take a piece of green felt the size of your display area, and some strips of gray felt to make roads. Glue the gray felt onto the green felt so you can arrange your houses beside the road, and lay it over your display area. You can be quite creative and add hills, miniature trees, a pond (using a small round mirror). For the snow, use spray on snow or wads of fluffy cotton wool. Set your houses and other items in place, then add the snow to the display.

A starry backdrop is a way to make your Christmas village really stand out. You can use dark blue or black glitter felt (you can get this from most craft stores), or create your own night sky with dark blue or black felt, and add starry sparkles with glitter or sequins. Fix this to the back of the shelf that holds your display or to the wall behind it.

Some movement will really bring your village to life. Hang a bright silver bauble for the moon, set up a tiny train bearing Christmas parcels, and regularly change the position of your figures. This charming display will enchant all who see it.
