Antioxidants are powerful defense phytochemicals that are capable of protecting the body against damaging free radicals, generated by the natural metabolism of the body, environmental and chemical pollutants and unhealthy lifestyles or eating habits. Free radicals are volatile and can increase risks of cardiovascular diseases, cancer, premature aging and age-related eye diseases like macular degeneration. Scientists agree that a diet high in antioxidants is the best way to scour free radicals and prevent cellular damage. A variety of fruits, particularly, those with deep pigments boast high levels of antioxidants and it is wise to include these liberally in your diet.

Berries

In a recent Mayo Clinic report, berries are among the top antioxidant contenders. Just who are these stars of the berry family? Blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries and cranberries are all honorable contributors. Their deep blue, red and pink pigments come from a group of powerful antioxidants called anthocyanins. The Journal of Biomedicine and Biotechnology revealed that research trials showed that anthocyanins demonstrated significant ability to reduce cancer proliferation and inhibit tumor formation. In particular, fruit extracts with high levels of anthocyanins are effective against various phrases of cancer activity.

Acai berry has received many health accolades from its ability to reduce weight, lower cholesterol to improved vitality. While research has turned out conflicting reports, the grapelike fruit, hailing from the rainforests of South America, remains a rich source of antioxidants, nutrients and heart-healthy fats.

Fresh organic berries can be purchased at health stores or the local farmers' market. Some regular supermarkets carry organic varieties as well. Are frozen berries just as good? The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) states that frozen fruits are just as good in terms of nutrients. Berry supplements can be found in health stores, gourmet and online health stores. Since acai berry spoil quickly, they are often available in juice, extracts or other health products such as supplements or energy bars.

When it comes to stalling aging, researchers at Tufts University measured various fruits for its antioxidant power and prunes come out tops. Prunes are dried versions of plums, and they boast high levels of vitamin C, vitamin B1, B2, B6, potassium, vitamin K, boron, in addition to dietary fiber.
