How to save 50% on your grocery bill

As people all over the country try to weather the impact of the nation's recession, they look for ways to cut down on expenses, and they become much more cognizant of everything they purchase. One of the most important ways by which one can save a lot of money is on their groceries. A prudent shopper who plans carefully and keeps track of everything can cut a grocery bill by 50%.

Here is a look at some easy ways by which to reduce that bill.

PLANT A GARDEN -

There is no getting around the fact that fresh produce consumes a large part of our weekly grocery bills. No matter how much space you have, how big a garden you can plant, or how big your family is, you can plant a vegetable garden that will reduce the cost of your grocery bill substantially. Part of getting the biggest bang for your buck involves knowing what to grow and what will yield the greatest savings.

If you have the space, grow enough so that you can can, freeze or preserve a portion of your bounty. Most things can be canned or preserved in some way. If you are willing to put forth the effort that a garden requires, you can probably shave a good $2500 off your yearly food bill.

DENT AND BENT STORES -

If you have a Dent and Bent store near you, you can purchase brand name merchandise there. They get the stuff from grocery stores because the grocery stores can't sell merchandise in damaged packaging. Dent and Bent stores take this merchandise and sell it for a fraction of the regular retail cost. As long as nothing has been opened or damaged in such a way that the product may be exposed, it's perfectly safe to buy these rejects.

CHECK OUT THE DOLLAR STORE -

Believe it or not, the Dollar Stores have started to carry brand name merchandise, and many stores are carrying food items as well. You won't find everything you would find in the grocery store, but you can find a lot of condiments and basic staples, and the price will be significantly less than what you'd pay at the grocery store.

JOIN A FOOD CO-OP -

Food co-ops are a great way to save on a grocery bill. They are often a great place to purchase things in bulk at a fraction of the regular retail price. There is always a catch, however, and in the case of food co-ops, it usually means that in order to get the discount, you have to volunteer for a certain amount of time each month. It isn't a lot. The more you are willing to put in, however, the greater the discount will likely be.
