Humanity is going to have amazing challenges ahead, will we be able to react and deal with these issues? Nobody knows what the future holds, while some things are seemly certain, other things are being hotly debated, or denied, and other events are bound to be total blindsides.
Global warming for one is a predicted event, but some are in denial, as a result if indeed it does occur, those people will certainly be unprepared. On the whole even scientists who agree it is happening, do not fully know exactly what could happen, or when, so true preparedness is impossible.
Another predicted problem, is one that has scientists very concerned, this being the expanding Holocene extinction event. Species of animals are going extinct at rates never observed before, now honey bees seem to be dwindling. The problem will spiral into a global famine as honey bees not only pollinate many fruiting plants, but also alfalfa, a crop we rely on to feed cattle.
War is a predicted problem as a result of a number of factors, one being the rising water levels as a result of global warming. Additionally war is a very real possibility, due to populations putting more demand on resources. Add to this the reality of food shortages and we clearly see a problem, but what can we do to prepare for it? We can stock pile food, and build armies, but these are self serving measures, and while they may protect the few, they do not protect humanity as a whole.
On a smaller scale we live at a time when parents are not giving children correct coping skills for dealing with problems. Parents of today seem to be trying to be their children's friends rather than offering rules, structure, and discipline. Children have no ability to cope when they are told No. Parents are giving in to their children's whims and wishes like never before.
Partially we live in more competitive times and nobody wants to be the family who didn't allow their child to have a cell phone, TV in their room, computer, or latest toy. Partially parents do not want to be embarrassed publicly by a temper tantrum. A lot of problems have to do with increasing divorce rates, as both parents want to be the "good" parent, neither is willing to deny the child something he, or she, wants. All of this adds up to a child who is unable to deal with not getting their way all the time, a child who is not resilient, and not tolerant of change. Soon we will have adults unable to deal with problems and setbacks in their lives.
Some children are being raised by the entertainment industry. They have no idea on how to deal with boredom, and cannot function without some form of stimulation. We even see televisions in vehicles now catering to our children's entertainment needs, when years ago people learned how to deal with these times by looking out the window.
On a level few people consider, we are effectually raising a generation of children who are not prepared for the real world, let alone a changing future. If we want humanity to be strong we have to instill a strength in our children that many people are overlooking. We also have to open our eyes to foreseeable problems and meet them head on rather than sticking our heads in the sand and hoping they will just go away.
