Magic the Gathering card analysis: Immaculate Magistrate

"Immaculate Magistrate" is a 2/2 green elf shaman printed as a rare for the Magic the Gathering expansion set known as "Lorwyn." This is one of the numerous cards in the Lorwyn block that encourage players to build around a theme of creatures. In the case of the Immaculate Magistrate, players are encouraged to build around elves. So far, elves seem to have great synergy with each other. In an elf-themed deck, you should be able to get a lot out of the Immaculate Magistrate.

The converted mana cost for Immaculate Magistrate is four. You will need one green mana and three colorless mana to play Immaculate Magistrate onto the battlefield. For what Immaculate Magistrate can do, the converted mana cost is well worth it. In a sense, this has one major ability in which is more than enough enticement to build around elves. If you can get Immaculate Magistrate onto the battlefield early enough, it should be good for you and bad for your opponents. Think of this as a means of "protecting your assets."

What does Immaculate Magistrate do in the first place?

By tapping the Immaculate Magistrate, you get to put a +1/+1 on a target creature for each elf you control. Make sure the target creature neither has Shroud nor Protection from Green. This is a good way to boost the power and toughness of your creatures let alone elves. Despite the Immaculate Magistrate requiring four mana to spend, green, out of all the five colors, has the best mana acceleration. Elves are responsible for green having excellent mana acceleration.

For the first few turns, you simply need to play elves that cost one green mana. A good number of those elves allow you to tap them to produce one green mana. By the third turn, you should be able to play Immaculate Magistrate. Should you do this early enough, you can use it to boost the elves you already have on the battlefield. If you have a powerful creature with Trample, Flying, Haste, or so forth, you can use Immaculate Magistrate to boost that creature.

If Immaculate Magistrate is your only creature, it can boost itself. You can really exploit this ability with "Rhys the Redeemed" and "Elvish Promenade." Elvish Promenade allows you to put a 1/1 green elf warrior token onto the battlefield for each elf you control. Rhys the Redeemed lets you spit out 1/1 white and green elf tokens along make tokens that are copies of your tokens already on the battlefield. With all those elf tokens on the battlefield, you can tap Immaculate Magistrate to put that many +1/+1 counters on a creature.

Overall, Immaculate Magistrate is a great card to have in any elf deck. If you are playing with elves, this is a card you should consider getting.
