High school is a completely different world from middle school and grade school. If you have a child who is about to enter high school, it pays to help them prepare for what is ahead. There is nothing like sending a child off to their first day of high school without some preparation.

Here are some ways that you can prepare your child for high school:

Discuss what high school will be like- Your child will have no clue that they will be in for a completely different type of day in high school than their previous school. They will change classes each class instead of after several classes in a row. They don't know that they will be more responsible for finding their way around the school. The school is much larger than their previous school as well. Your child might feel a little overwhelmed the first time they walk into their new school.

Take for a visit to the school- You may have a chance to take your child on a tour of the school with you. This will help new high school students get a better feel for what they are facing. This will probably help prepare your child for high school more than anything else you can do. When your teenager can see what the school looks like and how it is laid out, they will have a much better understanding of how to handle him/herself once he/she is there.

Getting the right stuff- You want to make sure that your child is ready for high school by having the right equipment and clothing. You want your child to easily make friends. Clothing is very important during the high school years. Let your teenager pick the clothes he/she wants to wear to school (as appropriate). This will make his/her first day of high school go much more smoothly. Purchasing notebooks and loose leaf paper along with pens and number 2 pencils are a smart idea. You can't go too far beyond that because each class will have it's own set of equipment that your child will need. It greatly depends on the teachers that he/she has as well.

Knowing about the bus- You will need to find out the bus schedule, bus number and where the bus will pick your child up. If your child is riding a bus, this is the most important information that you must prepare for your child before his/her first day of high school.

If your child knows a little about the school and what he/she is heading into there shouldn't be any problems on the first day. If you leave your child unprepared for high school, it could lead to a great deal of confusion for him/her. This could mean he/she is late to classes or even misses their school bus. Prepare you child for high school to avoid these situations.
