Magic the Gathering card analysis: Jagged-Scar Archers

Green has never been overly effective at removing creatures. This is not generally a problem for those creatures which remain on the ground as you as a green mage should be able to block that creature with a 9/9 deathtouch beast of some type, but for creatures in the air it can become an issue. Having even a single creature fly over your army every turn laughing at you as bird droppings hit the head of that same 9/9 deathtouch creature can become frustrating, so it is time to bring out the archers.

Jagged-Scar Archers is an uncommon elf archer from the Lorwyn expansion set of magic the gathering. It costs two green and one colorless to put into play, and has a power and toughness equal to the number of elves that you have in play. As this itself is an elf that makes it a minimum of 1 but it is more likely to be 3 or 4.

One of the major reasons that you would play this though, beyond its ability to use the elves token making ability to become quite menacing is its ability. The Jagged-Scar archers must tap, and it reads "Jagged-Scar Archers deals damage equal to its power to target creature with flying."

This is a reasonably powerful ability as it allows it to simply kill creatures with flying, and while the restriction to flying creatures may seem like a problem the truth is that there is already a mechanism in the game for Jagged-Scar Archers to deal damage to a non flying creature called blocking, and it is less limited in some ways that other similar abilities. This is because it does not require anything except that the creature flies while many other similar abilities require that the creature be attacking. This means that you can now shoot that bird of paradise out of the air without needing the opponent to do anything but play it.

It is also worth noting that the damage it does is not based on the number of elves but by the creatures power, and while this may be the same in most circumstances there is nothing requiring it to be. There are elf cards which allow you to put +1/+1 counters on elves, others that give all elves bonuses ,and card such as quest for the gem blades all which could make this more powerful and who wouldn't enjoy killing your opponent hypnotic specter with a archer.
