When people think about college, distance learning is not one of the things that comes to mind. It still seems too technological, or not legitimate enough, as if employers would lend as much credence to a degree earned through distance learning. However, as more and more time passes, all of these barriers are being brought down.
There are many advantages to distance learning. Practically speaking, you can take classes without ever having to leave your home. That is quite a convenience factor. All college students dread 8am classes, but sometimes that is the only time slot that a required class is offered, meaning you are out of luck. As a distance student, these limitations do not apply, as you can complete courses and homework essentially at your own convenience. If you want to get all of your work done in the middle of the night, that is fine for distance learning. It works around any schedule (as long as you can access the internet at any time).
This allows you to hold down a regular job more easily while still taking classes. Once again, if you are in a more traditional setting at college, your day will be constantly interrupted by classes, and finding steady employment could be tough. This is not so for distance learning, as you could easily work a full-time job and then just do your classes around that work time. People from all walks of life can now take classes... whether you are a business professional or a stay-at-home parent, distance learning is just as viable for you.
Distance learning can also cut down on the costs of college. Since you won't be using the university's facilities, and you won't have to commute to classes everyday, the expenses go down for you. Tuition will likely be lower, and you will save money on things like gas. This can be a much more affordable option for people that will struggle to pay the rising tuition rates of many colleges and universities.
So there are many benefits and advantages from doing distance learning to get through classes and school. As long as you are self-motivated (this is key) and can teach yourself some things, distance learning could be a great tool for you. If you have always wanted to go back to school, but thought you never had the time or the money to really do it, distance learning is something that you should take a look at.
