Vinyl siding is one of the easiest methods to finish off the outside appearance of any home. Vinyl siding is often said to be maintenance free but it can easily deteriorate in warm, tropical climates, as acid rain and UV radiation takes its toll. Vinyl siding will often be transformed from a smooth to a rough surface, a surface which becomes the ideal growing area for mildew. Removing mildew from vinyl siding though is a relatively easy process.
The first step in removing mildew from vinyl siding is to actually identify whether there is mildew present. Black areas on the vinyl siding may well be the evidence of the fungus, but might equally be simply dirt. The easiest way to test is to get a little amount of bleach and wipe away at the black area. If it disappears then the black mark is likely to be mildew, if it remains and just smears it is likely to just be dirt.
Whether the black mark proves to be mildew or dirt, the next thing to do is the same thing. Dirt needs to be removed form the vinyl siding before any mildew treatment can begin anyway. Dirt is best removed from vinyl siding through the use of a high pressure washer, a tool that can be easily hired from most tool centres. Some care though does need to betaken to ensure that the water doesn't get behind the siding.
The best way to then remove any mildew from vinyl siding is to create a spray solution of one quarter bleach to three quarter water. As with any cleaning product it is best to test the solution on an unseen area of the siding to ensure that it doesn't create further issues. Once sprayed onto the vinyl siding, the solution should be left in place for half an hour before being scrubbed off with a sponge or soft brush. The whole vinyl siding should then be hosed down.
Removing mildew from vinyl siding is something done as quickly as possible, as soon as the fungus is noticed. Mildew will spread extremely quickly if left to its own devices. If it looks like being too big of a problem then there are plenty of professional cleaning firms that can undertake the job for a homeowner. It is though important to remember that as well as being unsightly mildew can have an impact on people's respiratory systems.
