Classroom projects: Jungle safari craft ideas

The topic of Jungle Safari craft ideas is a bit confusing. Is this wanting craft ideas for things one can find on a Jungle safari or craft ideas of things one might need on Jungle Safari? There is also the possible meaning of craft ideas for things one might see on jungle safari. For the purpose of meeting most classroom needs, we will consider it to mean what will either be needed for a pretend safari or what might be seen on a jungle safari.

First thing one needs on a jungle safari is a hat! Hats can keep you shaded (not really needed in the jungle due to trees), but they also protect you from insects and snakes, as well as animal poop (there are more than birds in the trees in the jungle) from getting in you hair. You can try weaving a hat using palm fronds if available, or strips of stiff paper painted green since this is pretend. You weave just like you would a mat, and then twist or fold it to fit on your head, just like with paper.

There every jungle safari has to have some type of weapon. Caribbean "Cutlasses" (machetes) are best, and can be made out of cardboard or lightweight wood. Guns are frowned upon in schools and not easy to make, unless they are "blowguns"! Hollow reeds or bamboo work best and can even roll cardboard tubes. Sharp darts are probably not safe. but round balls of paper will work well (Yep, it is basically a spit ball gun) and hurt no one.

On jungle safari, you will need cooking utensils, so think about gourds and coconuts. The jungle has gourds that literally grow on trees (The Calabash tree, cannon ball tree and even a legitimate gourd tree). You can simulate these with regular gourds. They can be made into bowls, spoons and even cups. The Coconuts will split in half and also make nice cups.

Of course, no jungle safari with be complete without monkeys, and whole coconuts make excellent monkey heads! Prop them upright and then just paint on eyes and a nose then smiling mouths! Presto, instant monkey.

Jungle sounds for you safari can be crafted by having the students string up bamboo as wind chimes or use it for flutes. The gourds can also be made into miniature drums and rattles.

Hats, weapons, cooking, monkeys and music, the jungle safari crafts are made, now time for the safari!
