Christmas tree ornaments, cards, gift wrapping paper, cookies for Santa, place mats, impromptu put together manger scenes are easy craft projects for kids at Christmas. They like to get in the action since Christmas is a delightful time and their anticipation is something to behold. Crafting will work off some of this pent up energy. Also, this is a perfect time to teach them that this holiday is for giving. They learn this by making their own gifts to give to their loved ones and then designing the wrapping paper. Giving also tends to curb some of their natural greediness at this time of year.
*Christmas tree ornament ideas are everywhere. Cut them from construction paper, decorate pine cones, make Styrofoam balls into snowmen, twist bits and scraps of fabric and glue into angels and wise men. Do likewise for Mary, Joseph, Baby Jesus, and animals looking animals such an s sheep, cows, etc. Add a bit of ribbon or wire and hang. Let the item itself suggest what kind of ornament.
As an example, a small plastic butter cup lid or coffee can lid may be quite easily turned into a framed picture of their small school picture. How? Cover the inside and out with fabric, and cover with clear plastic. Before adding the picture, punch a hole in through the plastic and lid. These can be either elegant or as brusque, depending on their age and their talent.
*Pine cone tree ornaments will need only a bit of fluff, such as a bow, a backing with miniature paper doily or some filigreed paper work, or a red or green bow, pasted on bits of yarn, etc., to become a tree ornament. The tree shaped cones are perfect as ornaments or as stand-alone Christmas trees. To make the trees, halves a Styrofoam ball for a stand, and punch a hole in the rounded section and decorate. Small colored beads - contestation paper punched out dots, aluminum foil dots - will be pasted on the petals to simulate Christmas tree balls.
*Christmas cards are expensive and not as personal as those the kids can make. Fold a sheet of white paper horizontally and the vertically and they will have a ready made card to decorate. You can, of course buy them cards already cut but why go this expense? They will be so encouraged in giving that will want to make lots of these for all their friends. Have them cut and paste pictures, paste in Christmas sticker in their own arrangements, paste on a bit of seasonal greenery, or whatever.
