A square face is virtually as wide as it is long and features a strong, angular jaw line. If you'd like to make your face resemble a more oval shape, there are many ways to do so. The most common ways to achieve this are by making the right choices when it comes to your hairstyle, make up, neckline, accessories and eyebrow shape.
Hairstyle
Hairstyles that extend past the shoulders are the most flattering on a square shaped face, because they add the appearance of length to your face shape. You also want to make sure you style your hair with volume on top of the head, because this will also enhance length, rather than width. Always choose an off center part, because center parts have a tendency to make the face look wider. Deep side swept fringes look good on a square shaped face. It is also beneficial if you style your hair with waves or curls, because this can help to soften the angular appearance of your jaw.
Makeup
When it comes to applying makeup, you want to try and stick to playing up your eyes, rather than your mouth, because you want to avoid focusing on the lower part of your face. Make sure you apply blush or contouring powder to the center of your cheekbones in a circular manner, rather than extending outwards, because you want to minimize the width of your face.
Neckline
When it comes to clothing choices, make sure you avoid high necklines, because these will further widen your neckline. Boat necklines that are cut straight across are one of the worst offenders. You want to look for deeper necklines like scoop necks, or deep and narrow V necks.
Accessories
Your accessories can also influence the appearance of your face, so make sure you also make wise choices in this department. For sunglasses or prescription frames, look for styles that feature thin frames and are oval or round in shape. When it comes to selecting a hat, look for curvy, floppy styles, rather than more structured styles and also look for hats that feature height at the top. Choose long necklaces rather than short styles because you want to take the focus away from your jaw line. In the earrings department round hoops can help create a softer facial appearance and long dangly earrings can add length to your face.
Eyebrow shape
Keep your eyebrows strong rather than thin and wispy, because you need to balance out your strong jaw line. You want to try and create a curvy brow shape, rather than a strong angular shape, but make sure you include a good arch.
The more elements you work into your look, the higher the chances of deceiving the eye into thinking you have an oval shaped face.
