Magic the Gathering card analysis: Eyes of the Wisent

"Eyes of the Wisent" is a green enchantment spell printed as a rare for the Magic the Gathering expansion set known as "Lorwyn." This is a rather interesting card that you can use in a certain deck as a side-board. In the Lorwyn block, there is a dynamic in which there are cards that encourage players to build around a theme or sub-theme of creatures. In this respect, Eyes of the Wisent encourages you to build around the theme of elementals.

The converted mana cost for Eyes of the Wisent is two. You will need one green mana and one colorless man to cast Eyes of the Wisent. For what Eyes of the Wisent can do, the converted mana cost is well worth it. If you can get Eyes of the Wisent onto the battlefield early in the game, it should look good for you for the first several turns. Keep in mind that Eyes of the Wisent is an enchantment spell.

What does Eyes of the Wisent do in the first place?

Whenever an opponent casts a blue spell during your turn, you may put a 4/4 green elemental token onto the battlefield. For this reason, Eyes of the Wisent makes a good side-board against blue. The only types of blue spells an opponent can cast during your turn are instant spells or spells with Flash. Flash lets opponent play spells at any given time they are playing an instant. In this respect, it may make an opponent think twice before playing some spell against you during your turn.

One can ask: How do you get the most out of Eyes of the Wisent?

The obvious thing would be to build an elemental themed deck. Plus, you want to have cards that help elementals out. One would be the "Caterwauling Boggart." When that is on the battlefield, each elemental you control cannot be blocked except by two or more creatures. If your opponent has at least two creatures, and you have three of those 4/4 elemental tokens created by Eyes of the Wisent, your opponent can only block one of them.

You can also play "Door of Destinies" and pick the elemental creature type. When you play an elemental spell, you get to put a charge counter on Door of Destinies. Creatures of the chosen type get +1/+1 for each charge counter. If you have five charge counters on Door of Destinies, your elemental creatures would get +5/+5. If an opponent plays a blue spell during your turn with Eyes of the Wisent on the battlefield, you get to spit out 4/4 green elemental tokens that get +5/+5. They would be 9/9 green elemental tokens.

Overall, this is a good enchantment to have if you know your opponent will play blue spells during your turn. If that is the case, you should definitely have Eyes of the Wisent in your deck.
