Classroom projects: Seashell craft ideas

She sells seashells by the seashore, but how much does she sell seashells for? Now try to get the class to say that five times fast and then after everybody has their tongue tied up, they will be ready to quiet down and try to make some seashell crafts! Seashells come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors. They are also available near and ocean or sea, but also at almost every craft store. Children will love working with seashells for making crafts, and there are a lot of crafts that can be made from seashells!

Start with wind chimes! They are easy and cheap to make and will be lovely to watch as well as listen to. Take a large shell and drill several holes along the edge (It will take a tile or glass drill bit and this should be done by an adult before class starts). Use fishing line and the tie several strings of shells and attach to the big shell. Be sure the strings are close together or the chiming will be limited and you will end up with a hanging sculpture.

Then there are shell Sculptures that can be easily made by using clay and placing the shells in it in a pleasing fashion. It becomes something to sit on the counter or a shelf. The Clay can be baked with no damage to the shells. Mixing clay and shells can be done to create paper weights or even picture frames.

Shell animals are always fun. Use a thin spiral and attach cockles shells or clam shells along the sides and create butterflies. Use round clams and make beetles by putting little shells as feelers. The class should not be limited to real creatures, try things from Harry Potter of even Pokemon. Use a glue gun for best results, but be sure there is sufficient adult supervision, the glue can be hot and burn young (or even old) skin!

If it is just a few students and there is a sufficient budget, think about shell lamps. Take a large shell, drill a hole through the back and just urn in a small electrical wire, use low wattage bulbs or even Christmas lights. You can glue smaller shells around the base to make it level. Done properly it can go in the living room or even be used as a night light!

Seashells are fantastic craft items. Use your imagination and the imagination of the students, the results will amaze and surprise everybody!
