Magic the Gathering card analysis: Eyes of the Wisent

Blue and green have always had a very interesting rivalry. Not as strong as the battle between black and white in some ways their philosophies in the game of magic are even more polar opposites than those. This is because blue has always been about control with typically very weak creatures when compared to the other colors while green has had far fewer control elements but the best creatures in the game. This sort of battle between nature and civilization continues in lorwyn as the wizards of the islands fight the druids of the forests and one of the major weapons is Eyes of the Wisent.

Eyes of the Wisent is a rare elemental tribal enchantment from the lorwyn expansion set of magic the gathering. It costs one green and one colorless to put into play, and once in play against a blue deck it is going to be a bane.

This card reads "Whenever an opponent casts a blue spell during your turn, you may put a 4/4 green Elemental creature token onto the battlefield."

This naturally has no value at all against any other color and so it is never going to make it out of the sideboard of tournament play at best, but as a sideboard card it has some potential. Blue is popular in limited and in large part this is because of its ability to counter spell, and while this card in no way stops the opponent from being able to cast those spells it does dramatically limit their inclination to do so since the odds are good that the spells green is going to be casting are creatures.

Another value for this card could be in a heavy blue deck that has difficulty in mirror matches. There are other cards that could have a similar value, but if you find yourself in counter spell battles during games with opponents this becomes even more interesting. Because while if you win your opponents spells were not cast if you cast a spell which your opponent attempts to counter, and you counter their counter they are now in a difficult spot. If they use another counter spell they can stop the original but now rather than getting one 4/4 creature you get two.

The only real answer that blue has to enchantments is its all purpose bounce spell, this is also a problem for them on two fronts. The first is that bounce if cast on your turn will give you another 4/4 creature, while if not cast on your turn limits their mana four counterspells, but they will also be forced to counter the spell the next turn when you play it again, putting them behind in cards.
