Magic the Gathering card analysis: Elvish Promenade

I do not believe that there is a player of magic the gathering alive that given the opportunity of doubling the number of their creatures in play wouldn't take it. Part of the reason that this type of an ability is so useful is because of the dangers of over reaching. Putting out too many creatures is simply asking for a wrath of god to wipe you out, but a card which allows you to put a number of creatures onto the board allows you that creature advantage that you want without the risk of nearly as many cards. In addition to that it makes it more likely that your opponent will be forced to play out his hand giving your own wrath of god power.

Elvish promenade is a card that in the right deck allows you to double the amount of creatures you have in play. This is an uncommon elf tribal sorcery from the lorwyn expansion set of magic the gathering. It costs one green and three and reads "Put a 1/1 green Elf Warrior creature token onto the battlefield for each Elf you control."

This is a simple card and one that might lead you to playing a great number of elves and then this but the truth is that probably isn't the best choice. Instead a better choice might be to play a couple of the truly important elves, and then once you have three or four creatures in play double them. There are a few good choices for this but one of the more interesting is Rhys the Redeemed. This not only has the ability to put more tokens into play for a marginal cost but more important when connected to this card for four colorless and one white/green hybrid mana you can double your tokens. If you do this immediately after putting out 4 tokens with this is can become a problem for your opponent quickly.

In limited this card is valuable only if you have a considerable number of other elves and even then it is a mid level card. A handful of 1/1 partway through a game are likely going to be forced to either chump block, or gang up on one of your opponents creatures and either way it is likely to have no real net gain, but on the other hand it is quite playable and as an uncommon if you are able to draft multiples it works very well with itself.
