By Christmas time typically the hot summer blockbusters of the year are beginning for their second life a hot DVD releases. Judging by the decent movie summer we've had in 2009, there are plenty of titles to should be perfect gifts for teenage boys.

G.I. JOE: Rise of Cobra, a movie based on the popular boys' action figure, had major hype leading up to its release but was panned by critics. Although the acting is shoddy and the story is poor, it's ultimately an action movie and in that respect it delivers. G.I. JOE might be a better movie to watch at home on the HD Big Screen rather than the large movie screen because of the excessive action and movie parts.
Out on the same day is The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 starring two classic leads actors, Denzel Washington and John Travolta. This is a bit of a comeback for Travalta who I last remembered was wearing a fat suit and bra in Hairspray. Pelham is a classic train-heist film that is a remake of a 1974 original that's bright spot is the interchange between Washinton and Travolta. Everything else is decent but not amazing but a good watch for the teenage fan of suspense thrillers.

Sacha Baron Cohen's character Bruno, the popular Austrian reporter originally form Da Ali G Show is a reincarnation of Cohen's former character Borat, only crude in much different ways. This time Bruno pushes the limits on homophobia, racism and as always American cultural stupidity. Bruno is good for a bunch of good laughs and depending on how much shock appeal you can take, a few upset stomachs.
Possibly the biggest movie of the summer, Star Trek, is beaming into stores on November 17. The film has garnered a 95% rating on rotten tomatoes and is being hailed as an instant sci-fi classic. I think the demographics are pretty easy for this movie. If you're son is a fan of Star Trek you will likely be aware of it especially when you confuse it with Star Wars. Every Trekkie young and old will probably want this DVD in their collection so do them a favor this Christmas and buy Star Trek.

I think we all remember Christian Bale's blowup going viral on Youtube and the numerous spawns and remixes that came afterwards. That rant of course occurred during filming of Terminator Salvation. This movie may end up being the worst of all the Terminator movies - no small fact considering T3: Rise of the Machines - but has killer robots, the guy who plays Batman, and a really hot girl so it is acceptable as an action blockbuster. Terminator fans will reluctantly head to the store to pick this one up if not just to complete the collection or use as a coaster.

The hit comedy of the summer, The Hangover, has already been considered to new Vegas Comedy replacing the throne left by Swingers. The trio of Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, and Zach Galifinakis are brilliant together and each has their own respective moments. Galifinakis may have the most laughs but every character including performances from Heather Graham and Ken Jeong steals the spotlight from time to time. This may be the best comedy of the year and a great purchase for those funny teenagers.
Inglorious Basterds is also out on the 15th and what better gift to symbolize Christmas than Tarantino's gory film about scalping Nazis. The film's style is pure Tarantino and some of the dialogue are his sharpest yet. There is less action than expected but when there is expect a bloody spectacle. From rewriting parts of history to rewriting the conventions of film, Tarantino has done it again with a riveting story of Jewish revenge.
