How to make Christmas mug gifts

by M. J. Joachim

Christmas is coming and you need to budget your gifts carefully. Why not make some great gifts you can present in a decked out holiday mug? Mug gifts are nice because they can be personalized for each person on your list. You can even start a new holiday tradition, where each year you give a new mug dated on the bottom.

Part of the thrill of giving Christmas mugs is deciding what to put in them. Someone on your list may be a coffee fanatic, while another person might prefer tea, and just about everybody will enjoy a good cup of steamy cocoa. Those are obvious choices for mug gifts, but there are some not so obvious ones too.

You can make mugs for the artist on your list by filling it with paints, charcoal pencils and paint brushes. You can also make a mug for the life of the party on your list by filling it with essential hangover cures like seltzer, aspirin, and maybe even a small bottle of hair of the dog that bites him. You can also make mugs gifts for teachers, co-workers, and people who crochet.

Artists may enjoy some flavored water packets in their mugs, while teachers can always use pencils and stickers; many of them depend on a strong morning cup of coffee to help them face the day, so add some specialty instant coffee to their mug. People who crochet enjoy keeping busy while relaxing. Fill their mug with crochet hooks, scissors, and a skein or two of yarn. Add some powdered lemonade, and they will be positively thrilled.

The idea behind making a good holiday mug gift is to include some sort of drink in the package. You can add a package of hot cocoa to a mug for someone who likes to read, and include a gift card to their favorite book store with a few bookmarks for added decoration. The golf pro on your list might like some new tees and a polishing cloth for her clubs. Add some green tea bags, and you'll likely hit a hole in one.

Determining what to put in your Christmas mug gift truly depends on who is on your list and what they like to do. You can find unique mugs at antique stores, flea markets, dollar stores, and lots of retail outlets. Then, when you've figured out the theme of your mug gift, you can assemble it and get it ready to place under the tree.

To assemble your mug gift you will want to make a nice presentation of the items you're putting in the mug. After you've finished arranging them, cut a large piece of cellophane, big enough to bundle up and tie at the top of your mug. Seal it with ribbon or string, securing mini ornaments for an added effect. If you want your gift to remain a secret until it is opened, put it in a holiday bag and cover with crumpled tissue paper, shredded colored paper, or anything else you'd like. Mug gifts are easy to make and sure to be a perfect gift for anyone on your list.
