Classroom projects: Frog craft ideas

Frogs are fascinating creatures! They are hatched from eggs in the water (And those eggs do not necessarily have to have been fertilized), swim around as tadpoles and then develop lungs and legs. Next thing one knows they are up hopping around on land! Few other creatures can do this, and the ancestors of frogs were around before the dinosaurs. Frogs also come in many bright and unusual colors, can leap incredible distances and some walk up glass surfaces.

Unfortunately frogs are also vanishing from many places. Water pollution is causing them to either die or mutate beyond the ability to survive. They also are running out of living spaces as man dries out wetlands and uses up all the fresh water. Unlike the old days, few people realize that frogs and newts in the water mean it is pure enough to drink! The only way to save the frogs is through education.

Frog crafty ideas are far and few, but they are there. If possible, you could order frog eggs from a nature supply store and then allow the frogs to develop, just make sure it is legal in your area and you will have homes for the frogs. You can then have the children do paintings of the frogs and also get them to look up frogs on the Internet to see the brightly colored Poison Arrow Frogs. These drawings can either be framed for the wall or laminated and used as place mats.

Then there is simple sculpting of the frogs using clay or papermache. This can be done by any child by just giving a blob and then let them go to work. If you can't get tadpoles and frogs, you can have them start with "Polliwog" from the Pokemon and the convert it to a frog.Again, use bright colors as all frogs aren't only green and brown!

Then there is origami, an excellent craft idea for young children. Origami is cheap and teaches the students how to follow instruction as well as be creative. Children as young as 3 can make origami frogs. Here is one excellent website, Wikihow, with detailed instructions and photographs. To be a bit more innovative, you can either get the children to use multicolored paper or color the paper before they start folding, then see what color the frog becomes!

Frogs are fascinating and can be crafty little creatures!
