Poetry: Art

by Lajos Becsi

Created on: November 01, 2009

Farewell to a meteor.

The meaning of your name is all that we are left with,

And of your soul we loved, and knew, and held.

It's carried by the melody and scansion of the word

That holds a secret kept in custody when you bestowed

On us the honour of your joys, and tears for us to stem.

The image we still hold of gold and tan, and blue, and white,

And red, and sometimes brilliant apricot, then black or rusty

Brown, denoted, when you wore them, the meaning of your

Taste and studious search for jewels in the human arts,

Civilisation, in one word and now, a treasure lost to us.

So brief was our encounter, so deep the topics of our talks.

Our eyes were often lit by yours. The smiles your lips

Engendered infectious, yet so true, set us off in such manner

That Age was beautified by Youth's respect and honour.

Your name is all we have now, in Celtic lore forlorn

Yet still of Brabant or Nanterre, or Attila, or even Saint Denis!

Genovefa! A name, so strange as to have had the insult of

Transcription into other tongues, but now so clear! A clarion's call
