Why it is important to train a dog properly

We just can't control him.

Of the many reasons given for surrendering a dog to an animal shelter, this is one of the most heartbreaking because given proper training, the dog probably slated for euthanasia could have been a wonderful family pet.

There are many reasons why it is important to train your dog properly.

1. Your relationship with your dog will be more enjoyable.

2. Your dog will not harm others.

3. Your dog will be a working, valuable member of your family.

Training starts the day you take your puppy home. There are four basic goals to achieve in the first few months. Done properly, they will lay the groundwork for a long and happy life with your dog.

1. Housebreaking. Whether you use a crate or just super vigilance, the key to housebreaking is making sure your dog is taken outside frequently. That means every hour when it's young. Confining the dog to a crate at night is a good way to make sure he doesn't soil in the house. But, you must be willing to get up at least once in the night to take him outside. Praise your pup lavishly when he goes potty outside. If he makes a mistake, don't scold simply take him outside. Potty training can become a bond between you and the dog as the dog is learning to please you.

2. Socialization. Your puppy should learn to be gentle and non-threatening with everyone who comes to your house. All puppies try out their teeth on you, but don't tolerate it. Simply stop the play and fold your arms. Your pup will soon learn that biting means the end to fun activity. As soon as your pup is safe with his required vaccinations, begin socializing him with other dogs. Puppy kindergarten is a great place for a young dog to learn how to play and how to stop playing on command. If your household has cats, you'll also want to teach your young pup to play gently and not to chase (good luck with that one.)

3. Basic obedience. A puppy is not too young to learn the basic commands of sit, stay, and come. The trick is to have short, fun lessons. Tell your dog sit as you gently push him into the sit position. Praise him and then say okay or whatever release word you choose. Once he has mastered the sit, ask him to stay. At first, it will just be a few seconds but as he gets the hang of it, you'll be able to move a few steps away. Any time he breaks the stay, go back to the beginning where he just sits for a second or two.

The come or recall is the most important command you'll teach your dog. It can save his life. In the house, call him
