If you're serious about getting in shape, you've probably considered joining a gym. It's a great way to vary your routine and ensure reaching your fitness goals. What should you look for in a fitness center, and how do you choose one?

Firm up your expectations about when and how you'll work out. If you're most likely to exercise after work, look for locations on the way home. Will you use the center for extended weekend workouts? Choose one nearby with long weekend hours. If you're a lunch-break exerciser, focus on gyms near work.

Consider what kind of workout you're looking for. Do you see yourself using cardio equipment, weight machines, or taking group classes? Make sure the fitness center gives you plenty of options in the area you'll actually use. A gym with lots of fancy equipment but a limited class schedule will be a bad fit if you love kickboxing classes!

Request a tour at the time of day you'll be working out. Is there available parking and open classes? Will you have to wait for a treadmill? Is the center adequately staffed? If you'll want to socialize, check out the type of crowd working out. If you're more comfortable being left alone, make sure there are quiet areas and available machines.

Take a close look at the changing rooms and exercise equipment. Is everything clean and in good repair? Make sure there are no funky odors, rattling equipment, or obvious mold or stains. Also notice the atmosphere. Is it friendly and social, or quiet and serious? If you aren't comfortable, you won't go.

Knowledgeable, credentialed staff will be happy to answer questions, and are critical to good fitness centers. Keep asking questions once the contract is handed to you! You should be paying around $20 to $70 per month. Inquire about trial periods before committing to years. Read the fine print, and don't be pressured. It's your money and health at stake, so take time to be comfortable with your decision. With so many options, there's sure to be a fitness center that's perfect for you!
