Christmas is a time of pleasant surprises and fun gift exchanges. What could be more fun than a tree full of pockets, each containing special, irresistible treasures. Pocket Christmas ornaments can be as small or as big as you need, and they can be decorated in fun and fancy ways. All you need is a little bit of imagination and to tap into your creative energy, and you will be able to make adorable Christmas pockets to adorn your tree.
*Types of Pocket Christmas ornaments: There are many ways to construct pocket Christmas ornaments. You can make them out of felt, crochet scraps, quilt squares, metal scraps, tree bark, paper, plastic, and even denim pockets redeemed from discarded jeans. If you look at something and can see a pocket in it, chances are you can make a pocket ornament out of it.
It's also fun to make pockets out of recyclables. Take an old soup can, or an envelope that came in the mail. Use a cereal box or toilet paper tube as a foundation for your pocket. Your skills at decorating it will fascinate family, visitors, and friends.
*How to Construct a Pocket Christmas Ornament: Once you have your pocket foundation, you need to bind and close three sides of it. You can do this in a number of ways. Fabric can be sewn and joined together with stitches and binding. Metal might be welded or nailed to a wood backing. Adhesives like super glue and hot glue work well for plastic and wood foundations.
If you are using a firm foundation, you'll want to make it big enough to leave room to insert and retrieve gifts hidden inside. Choose foundations that can be flexed and formed into a viable pocket. Once you have your pocket foundation, you will want to add a string or handle to it so it can hang from the tree. Sometimes this can be incorporated into the final design work of your ornament.
*Designing Pocket Christmas Ornaments: If you can picture it, you can make it. Is that old jean pocket ready to be spruced up with lace and beads? Will your felt foundation make a perfect angel, using the halo as the loop to hang on the tree? Does that toilet paper tube look like Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer? You can make a harness to use for hanging him.
Pocket Christmas ornaments are fun and easy to make. This is a great project for teachers and parents to make with their kids. Once you have a pocket ornament finished, you can move onto something much more challenging, and that is deciding what to put in it.
