The Ivory Tower and the Garden Seat.
The tower room! What splendid view!
And faced my desk the other way,
My work not more demanding,
A fleeting glance were missed to send
My silent wish to both of you.
I meet you oft through window
Panes, which, like you two, let
Clear light in, and show this ugly,
Wobbly, tottering, bench, which
Must have been a gardener's rest,
Decrepit now, and hideous, grey.
Some wizard once, upon his turn,
Would, long ago, when I was young,
Have cast a glance through these old
Panes, and shook his head at us bold
Two, when this old bench was shiny,
Green and firm to seat and hold our
Furtive groping, and ardent kiss.
My fear to-day, is not that your
Young love may wane Oh dread
And ugly thought but that this
Seat, for once too soft, might not
Be equal to the force by which
your passions are exploding
In you, though strong, but tender
Meeting of your souls, and that
Your love will have to prove
Its worth and truth for the first
Time, to get exposed to splinters,
Thorns and dirt as I expect
It will one gloomy day occur!
But hush, my doves, please do not
Share this eerie fear I have, for I
Can see that, heedless to the world
Around, this unsafe seat is where
You wish to meet, and eat your
Crunchy apples green, and in your
Kisses you want to share the bites
Your eager teeth and tongues are
Passing through each other's lips
For thus to drink your nectar: Love!
Leave me that fear! For if by chance
I see you there again thud down
On it, I'll pray that your green love
Will be for yet again, upheld!
And that the crashes in your future,
Alas I'm sure they will occur be
Spared my eyes I pray that they
Be the sole owners of the memory of
Seeing you, unknown to me, in bliss.
My blessings, that I vow, shall
Follow you and guard your lives
As soon as lunch is over. Your lunch,
That is! For mine's from twelve to one.
I send you two, unheard to you,
Unknown to me: my ardent wish
Godspeed, you both! From one to two!
