Secrets For Powerful, Effective Copywriting

Do you write copy as a hobby or because your next meal depends on it? What motivates you to write powerfully, effectively communicating ideas and concepts to your readers that make them want to do whatever you're asking of them? I have written good copy for many years and for just about any sort of subject, company, organization, person, or product you could imagine. Good copy that communicates effectively is more important today than ever before. The world is starved for good copy and it's your responsibility as a professional to make certain your work is up to certain standards. In the copywriting world, you write well or go hungry, it's that simple. So here the the secrets for powerful, effective copywriting.

Honesty really does matter here

First, before you write another word of copy, promise yourself that you can be totally honest with your reader. Readers can detect a lot about who you are by the words you write. It's true, I found out the hard way. Nevermind the details, just trust me here. Sure, you can write dishonest copy for awhile, maybe even make some money, but it will eventually catch up to you. That's the sort of stuff that erodes your soul. Sell out to your heart, do the right thing every time you write. Honest copy builds strong relationships, trust, and credibility. These things translate into long-term, return business. As my wife's Granny used to say, "A bird never flies so high that it's tail doesn't follow." In other words, what you do will follow you throughout your life - so be good!

Content is king

Professional copywriters have used the inverted pyramid method ever since I can remember. The pyramid places the five W's - What, Where, When, Who, and Why. The reason this method is so effective is it facilitates easy and quick reading for people who don't have a great deal of time. Even readers who don't read all your copy will be able to pick out and digest the important facts. Your content should be simple, straightforward, and direct. No one wants to read a lengthy discussion and have to pick out the information they really want.

Walk a mile in their shoes

Arguably the most important aspect of copywriting in my experience has been the ability to put one's self in the place of the reader. Communicate directly to your reader. Write as if you're in their world, talking directly to them. What reaction will your reader experience when reading your copy? Would you read your copy and take the action requested?
