Restaurant reviews: First Watch, Columbus OH

We were very surprised to find out that First Watch is a chain. There is the feeling from the moment that you walk in the door that you are a valued customer and there is none of the usually chain restaurant mentality.

We were quite desperate by the time we saw this restaurant. I used an older guide when looking for a place for breakfast and when we found that restaurant it was no longer in business. Luckily on the way to that restaurant we had spied First Watch along Morse Rd.

It is a new looking building pretty much what you would expect from a coffee shop. We were seated quickly and handed out menus and out hot drinks of choice were brought out. We were also given carafes to keep on the table so we never had to worry about whether our cup went empty.

One look at the menu had us convinced that we had made a very good choice indeed. That was reconfirmed as we watched the plates of other diners being carried out.

There was a board with specials on it. One of them was pumpkin French toast. Our friend ordered them. My husband ordered a very simple meal, fried eggs, toast, home fries and bacon. I decided to try the Floridian French Toast. How could I resist sourdough French toast topped with wheat germ, powdered sugar, strawberries, bananas and kiwis?

In addition what we ordered this restaurant offers a full complement of omelet's, chimichangas, pancakes and crepeeggs. Yes, crepeeggs, a combination of sweet crepe and fluffy eggs, it only we lived close enough to try more of these offerings.

When our plates came out we were delighted. Everything was even better than it sounded in the menu. The French toast was absolutely divine. The strawberries, kiwis and bananas were so fresh, they tasted as if they had just been cut. The bacon is served nice and crisp and even the home fires had good flavor.

Our service was efficient and we never felt neglected.

It isn't just about breakfast here either. They also serve lunch. They menu isn't huge but offers plenty of variety. They serve salads, wraps and sandwiches. There are healthy choices too. There is a salad called the Heath Nut which offers up Craisins, Granny Smith apples, raisins, granola, all white chicken meat served on a bed of romaine lettuce served with a fat free raspberry dressing.

We were very pleased with our breakfast at First Watch and given how crowded it was even on a weekday, it is also popular with locals. I am hoping that this chain will move east and hit Connecticut.
