There are many reasons as to why relationships fail - a lack of commitment to one individual, high expectations which are too unreasonable and even a lack of honesty. No one said that maintaining a relationship was going to be easy; however people seem to assume this because of how love is often portrayed in movies and books - thus giving us the wrong idea about love.
People set their expectations of a relationship quite high at times, and this therefore leads to disappointment later on. No one is going to be exactly what you imagined or your 'perfect partner' because quite simply, no one is perfect. This isn't to say that you should expect certain things from a relationship however, just be reasonable and don't expect the impossible. Always remember that no one is a mind reader, so if you don't tell your partner that they are doing something which you don't like or that you want help, they won't know!
No one is perfect, and although it may seem this way at first, your partner will always have 'flaws' that you will find - you must overlook these as it will be the same with every person you meet throughout your life. Don't pick out your partners faults and blame the failing of the relationship on that, to try and repair the relationship you must admit that you have made mistakes and try to see what your weaknesses in the relationship are. You can only improve if you admit that something is wrong, this is a common problem - no one likes to admit they are wrong or not perfect.
My current boyfriend was a little scared of commitment when I met him, and he had never had a relationship which lasted longer than three months because of this. After almost five years we are still going strong because I understood that he needed space to do his own thing. No one wants to feel trapped in a relationship, so give each other some space and spend days doing what you enjoy, such as a hobby with friends or family.
Don't think that love is going to be easy and that it doesn't take work or require compromises to be made. You have two individuals, who may be the same in some respects, but overall they are completely different - you are both going to want to go to different places, watch different films and so on, so compromise, watch the film you want to watch but next time watch what he wants to watch.
Love is almost effortless in films because you have to fictional characters who don't have to work for love in most cases, they are just happy and it works - however real life is
