SpongeBob's Greatest Hits

Label: Nickelodeon/Sony Music Entertainment

Spongebob's Greatest Hits features 17 original tracks familiar to audiences from the Nickelodeon animated TV series SpongeBob SquarePants. The zany square-shaped, yellow sponge with a sass-mouth liken to Carrot Top and the sharp wit of Russell Brand is celebrating 10 years on the network with a slew of singalong tunes including We've Got Scurvy performed by Pink, and a reggae-inspired remix of the SpongeBob SquarePants Theme Song sung by Cee-Lo Green of Gnarls Barkley. The bonus track Don't Be A Jerk (It's Christmas) is a special treat for audiences that's co-written by Tom Kenny, the voice of SpongeBob, and Andy Paley. The album is a vibrant dance party stoked by sunny-pop grooves and doo-wop embers and framed in celebratory regalia. It's a party befitting of SpongeBob's SquarePants 10th Anniversary.

Opening with the SpongeBob Theme Song re-mastered into a seafaring chantey, the album stays true to the cartoon's jovial mood and singalong jingles. The doo-wop harmonizing in Ripped Pants has a Beach Boys feel, and the bubbly, sock-hop grooves of Where's Gary? are embossed with a '50s pop sheen, which transforms into a dazzling choir that incites audience participation in My Tighty Whiteys. The old school style of the surfer punk riffs in Doing The Sponge brings this dance number into a power party jam, which then shifts into a club-pop inspired laser-light show in Stadium Rave. The metal rock riffs of Goofy Goober Rock are copied straight from Twisted Sisters tune I Wanna Rock, and the saloon style of the piano keys in Idiot Friends have a perky gait that is reminiscent of the Old West and Americana rootsy folk. The blue-eyed soul trimmings of Gary's Song are reflective of Taylor Hicks' pensive expressions, and the orchestral springs of The Bubble Song have a sunny-pop vibration that can brighten any day. The reggae stylizing of SpongeBob's Theme Song performed by Cee-Lo Green gives the track a Caribbean flare, while the Celtic-wrapped hooks of We've Got Scurvy resonate with Lord Of The Dance pomp.

SpongeBob SquarePants Greatest Hits fosters a party climate and a celebratory mood. The cartoon's creator Steve Hillenburg has witnessed his creation grow into a pop culture icon over the years, and this album revels in the humor and joviality that SpongeBob and his friends radiate. It's an album that fans of the cartoon series will like providing jolts of power pop fun.
