Preparing for the arrival of a new baby can seem like a daunting task. There are so many brands and options available that even the simplest items pose difficult decisions and turn the enjoyable experience of baby shopping into a nightmare. Every parent wants what is best for their baby and it can be hard to know whether the price reflects the quality and safety. However, it is the basics you need to concentrate on getting ready first.
Changing & Bathing
With modern designs of reusable nappies eliminating the hassle of old-style Terry towelling, it is becoming more common for parents to choose the finance friendly option of one-size, all in one reusable nappies. There are often local schemes run to encourage the eco-friendly option - ask your local council if vouchers or other incentives are available. Every baby is different and if you are using disposable nappies it is wise to test several brands to find the best fit, absorbency and value. Don't just stock up on Size 1, either. Most babies shoot up into size 2 and you don't want to be left with loads of spares.

It's a good idea to prepare for a premature birth by having a couple of tiny baby outfits - just in case. A new baby will need a minimum of 6 x vests, 6 x sleepsuits, a hat and scratch mittens. Don't forget to take into account the time of year your baby is due. A Winter baby will require cardigans and jackets as well.

Sleeping
It is your choice as to whether you use a Moses basket or crib for your newborn or place him straight into a cot. The smaller options are preferable if you can't fit the cot into your room, as most babies share their parents room for the first little while. Check safety regulation compliance when buying new products and take advice of the current guidelines for preventing Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (Cot Death) e.g. do not use a quilt or pillows in your child's cot until they are 12 months old. Night lights are invaluable as they allow you to care for the baby in the night without turning on a bright light,
