Magic the Gathering card analysis: Boggart Mob

There is little more frustrating than having an entire hoard of goblins being held at bay by two large creatures. And yet it has happened many times. The problem comes down to simple math, six 1/1 goblins attack an opponent with two 3/3 creatures, the two creatures block and the six goblins do four damage while two of them die. The next turn, the player can attack again, but now with only four goblins he is going to do only two damage, and the turn after that he is doing none. This is not a winning situation for a game, but sadly it is one goblins occasionally find themselves in, and while lightning bolt is one solution it is not the whole solution.

Boggart Mob is a rare 5/5 goblin warrior from the Lorwyn expansion set of magic the gathering. It costs one black and three colorless mana and must champion a goblin. This means that when it comes into play you remove a goblin from play, and when it leaves play you return that goblin. Since there are so many inexpensive goblins the odds are high this is not going to be a major cost for most goblin players.

A 5/5 for four is not bad, even with the cost of another goblin, but the real reason that you would play this is to overcome the weaknesses of the situation described in the first paragraph of this article. This ability reads "Whenever a Goblin you control deals combat damage to a player, you may put a 1/1 black Goblin Rogue creature token onto the battlefield"

Returning to the situation in the first chapter, you have six 1/1 goblins in play, you then cast this card and champion one, while your opponent has two 3/3 creatures. You are unwilling to attack with the Boggart Mob knowing that the opponent would double block and kill it so you attack, this time with five 1/1 creatures.

Your opponent blocks the two 1/1 as it did the first time and you do three damage, except this time you also put three 1/1 goblins into play. Because of this the next turn you have 6 tokens rather than four in the previous scenario. You can then attack again, this time with 6 1/1 creatures, and gain four addition tokens, putting you at eight token. And unless your opponent finds a solution the game is just going to continue to get worse for him from there.
