Today was Election Day.
Charisma decided she would run for sixth grade class president about a month ago. The class would be voting today at lunch. By the end of the day, the winners for executive board will be announced.
She wanted to be sixth grade president because she wanted to make class more fun. One of her ideas was to listen to cool music and eat snacks while they did their class work everyday.
Her motto was:
VOTE FOR CHARISMA, THE GIRL WITH CHARISMA!
Charisma screeched while tugging on her long and frizzy brown hair. She looked at herself in the mirror and said, "Hello, Miss President."
She was running late. Out of frustration Charisma balled her hair into a black scrunchy and walked out.
As she walked to school, she met her two best friends, Stephanie and Melvin, on the way.
"What's going on with your hair?" asked Stephanie patting the big poof.
"Don't ask," said Charisma rolling her eyes and shaking her head.
Just as they reached the crosswalk, everyone shouted, "Gross!"
Charisma looked down. She was standing in a small pile of dog poop.
"Argh!" she yelled, "Why does this have to happen to me?"
Her friends laughed and plugged their noses. They crossed the street as the woman crossing guard waved them on. Charisma lagged behind scraping her heels against the curb to get rid of the poop.
"Young lady are you coming?" shouted the grumpy crossing guard.
"Great, I'm going to smell like poop all day. I hope this doesn't influence my votes," she mumbled to herself as she jogged across the street.
"Is that part of your campaign strategy?" asked Melvin with a smirk.
Charisma threw her hands up exclaiming, "Ha, ha. Actually, after dog poop on my shoe, it can only get better!"
"If you don't win today, you can just blame it on the dog poop." said Stephanie with a wink.
Crazy things like this were common for Charisma. But she wanted today to be different. She was determined to show her classmates she was not the clumsy, jinx magnet they were used to seeing. She was kind, creative, and most of all, a leader.
Once the girls arrived at school they went to their separate classrooms.
"Charisma," said Ms. Gray, her 6th grade teacher, "We have a new student today. Do you mind sharing with her?"
Charisma smiled and happily replied, "No problem." Finally, something good was going to happen to her today.
"Excellent," answered Mrs. Gray, "I'm going to have her share your locker until we can get her a working lock."
Charisma looked puzzled.
The new girl emerged from the
