Poetry: Tell me how to say good-bye

by Shen-Li Lee

Created on: October 31, 2009

How do you say "goodbye" to something you love,

And begin to move on with your life again?

The past love has not diminished in any way,

But there is no longer any time for it.

I look back and sigh with regret,

I wonder if I will ever get over this love.

Each time I go back, the memories come flooding.

I feel the sadness of letting it go.

I know I'm lying to say it's enough,

To have these brief visits, all too infrequent,

When I still wish I could have the cake and eat it.

I am an old woman reliving the memories of her youth.

I cannot stop myself from looking back,

At what was a golden era in my life.

Those were the days that were magical...

Though nothing can ever take them away,

I know I will never have them again.

It is time to move on,

But my heart is still trapped within the past.

I know I will never stop loving it,

And I will forever have this hole in my heart.
