Travel the Lowcountry of South Carolina

Just like our license plates say...Smiling faces...Beautiful Places. That says it in few words about the Lowcountry of South Carolina. I have lived in the Charleston metro area for 23 years. I live in a beautiful town about 25 miles north of Charleston in Summerville. You may have heard of it before, it is nationally famous for our Flowertown Festival. Every April the azaleas bloom all over the city and it's just fantastic. The city holds a festival of many different interests. They have local historic home tours, food vendors, arts & crafts, and a carnival for kids.

Whether you are 2 or 92, Charleston offers a variety of things to do. It really does not matter what your interests are. If you like historical architecture, you will find it here. Especially in downtown Charleston. The historical districts offer home tours of homes dating back to the earliest colonial times from the 1700's. If you like Civil War history, you could not find a better place. The Charleston area is steeped in Civil War history! Charleston is known for the place that the first shot was fired at Fort Sumter. There are many places all over the low country that were battle fields. It's great for metal detecting, who knows...you may find a great treasure to take home. You can take a tour of Fort Sumter and actually walk the area that our soldiers walked. They have boat tours out of Charleston that will take you over to the Fort and tour it.

Charleston is a small town, but it makes up for size in attitude and culture. If you are into African culture, or the Gullah culture. The Gullah Geechee culture is thought to be the most authentic African-American community in the US. They live on many of the small islands off the coast. The Gullah are descendants of African slaves, and since the actual slave market was located here in Charleston, this area is engulfed in African rich history. If you are a fan of crafts you must look into the sweet grass baskets that are handmade by the Gullah. It is a dying art that is past down from generation to generation, it is beautiful! Besides the baskets are another type of African art that are handmade African dolls, one website to check out is http://zenobiasart.com, the are absolutely gorgeous!

Charleston also boasts wonderful beaches along our coast. We also have many great fishing or boating lakes. If you love to fish, you must hit the Folly Beach Pier. I love fishing off the Pier because you never know what
