When zombies attack - and you know they will sooner or later - it's important to keep your head about you, literally and figuratively. Panicking is never a good idea, and engaging in hand-to-hand combat with zombies should be avoided except as a last resort. Depending on what kind of zombies you're dealing with, you be zombie-fied by a slight scratch or bit.
This brings us to the heart of the matter - determining the sort of zombie attack you are facing. Before plunging into the battle, stop and ask yourself these vital questions:
1. Is this a global or localized outbreak of zombies? This is very important since you can't expect much outside help if the zombie problem is widespread. It will be every non-zombie for him/herself, so you'll need to be prepared for a difficult time.
2. Is this a temporary outbreak or permanent? This is crucial. You may only need to survive for a night or two i you're dealing with a Night of the Living Dead type of outbreak. Not that this will be a piece of cake, of course - a zombie mob can do a lot of damage in a short time. And as we learned from the fate of that film's hero, you have to be prepared to be mistaken for a zombie by other zombie fighters. Don't let your guard down just because the zombies have been mostly sent back to their graves.
3. Are your zombies voodoo-related or viral? Viral zombies, as we know, are highly contagious, and you'll need to take more precautions in dealing with them up close and personal than you would with voodoo zombies. Voodoo zombies can be quite creepy, but are far less harmful than many other zombie species. Frequently, they're only out to perform a single mission, and might well leave you alone if you haven't offended any witch doctors lately.
4. How fast can your zombies move? Most zombies are very slow moving, as one might expect from the reanimated dead. But the zombies reported in the 28 Days Later film were fast, aggressive, and highly contagious. This is an extremely dangerous combination. Pray your zombies will be of the more traditional variety of undead.
Once you've established the nature of your zombie opponents, you can get down to developing a survival strategy. Some experts recommend running, especially if the zombies are of the slow-moving variety. But keep in mind that even the slowest of zombies can overwhelm you if their numbers are great. Also, do you have a safe place to get to or are you just tearing off in a panic? My advice is, if you're already in a place that can
