We can all concur that we are experiencing challenging times. Many are losing their jobs and homes are being placed on foreclosure. Moreover, statistics revealed that within the United States, many people go to bed hungry. Some economists say that times are getting better. The fact is, Americans are still experiencing a recession. And, for a large family, times like these require creative and innovative ways in order to feed the entire clan.
The thing is, whether there is a recession or not, one has to consume food. In spite of stressful times, it is possible for a large family to eat budget-friendly meals without sacrificing their health. Now-a-days, because times are difficult, many families resort to cheap fast foods that will only pack on the pounds, and ultimately cause illnesses. Some of the ways a large family can plan meals on a budget are as follows:
PLAN AHEAD
It is best to make a list of the weekly meals. In doing so, you will be able to adhere to a budget, and, simultaneously seek out stores with discounts.
UTILIZE COUPONS AND DISCOUNT
Do make use of the coupons on-line and the printed press. This can tremendously reduce the grocery bill each time you shop. Some stores offer "buy one, get one free".
SHOP IN BULK
Purchase stock wholesale. Costco and BJ's are ideal for securing bulk items. These stores offer annual membership for a minimal amount. It would be cost-effective to buy cheaper cuts of meats, chicken legs and thighs, chopped meats (beef/turkey) and break them down in smaller serving sizes for each time you cook.
STOCK YOUR PANTRY
Do stock your pantry with staples like brown rice, whole wheat pasta, tomato sauces, canned sardines, salmon and vegetables. Do look keep an eye out for specials or sales, and purchase then.
FREEZE EXCESS/BUY FROZEN
Do purchase fruits and vegetables when there is a glut on the market; and store these in the freezer. The prices are generally cheaper than normal. In addition, buy and store frozen vegetables. These are very convenient and packed with valuable nutrients like their fresh counterparts.
PREPARING MEALS
When cooking for a large family on a budget, chopped meats (turkey/beef) are great for making a stock pot of pasta and tomato sauce. Frozen vegetables can be added for extra nutrition. Moreover, meat/tomato sauce can be stored in the refrigerator for a later date. All you need to do is to make fresh pasta. Stews can also be made and stored using the cheaper cuts of beef.
Some roasted chicken legs and thighs could be used for a chicken salad and chicken pot pie. And, another meal could be chicken, mashed potatoes and vegetables.
No one can deny, times are difficult. However, with a little creativity and incorporating the above plans and others, a large family can plan and prepare meals on a budget that will satisfy and reap nutritional benefits.
