When you are in Windham Connecticut and looking for someplace that is not a chain restaurant the Aero Diner offers a very nice option. Aero is a very fitting name since it is located very close to the Windham Airport and if you happen to be sitting and looking the right way you just might see one land.
We have never eaten here before but decided we had nothing to lose since we were headed to Providence and there are not a lot of choices along this road. As you walk in it's the 1950's all over again. The stools at the counter have an orangey red color and there are booths along the walls and some tables. All the tables have a juke box with lots of Roy Orbison songs, they don't work but they certainly do add to the atmosphere.
You can get breakfast all day here and they do offer lots of choices. I looked them over quickly but wasn't going to eat breakfast but I would love to come back and try the peanut butter pancake, which certainly sounds interesting.
Their menu is quite large and it is supplemented by a handwritten sheet of today's specials. We were there in October and it seemed to me that there was a bit of an Oktoberfest feel to some of the items on the sheet, brats and kraut was one I remember. We didn't order from the specials. We ordered foot long hotdogs.
I know with all kinds of great choices why would we order foot-long hotdogs? I have no explanation it is just what we felt like. I ordered the piccalilli foot-long and added their hand cut French fires for the chips and my husband had the kraut dog. I decided to go crazy and order a root beer float.
Be prepared for the biggest float you have ever seen. It didn't come in the usual glass it came in the metal milk shake container. It was huge, I couldn't finish it. It was good though.
The hotdog itself was just average put the piccalilli was sweet and hot and added a lot of zing to an otherwise bland dog. The real prize however was the French fries. They are indeed fresh cut and fried to perfection. They are worth coming to eat here again.
Serve was perfect and it was a nice friendly place to eat. We watch the other meals coming out and everything looked really good. Certainly it was busy and no one was complaining. I am sure that we will come back here, out meal cost us less than $20 and we were very satisfied.
