Magic the Gathering card analysis: Colfenor's Urn

by Can Tran

Created on: October 30, 2009

"Colfenor's Urn" is a colorless artifact printed for the Magic the Gathering expansion set known as "Lorwyn." This is one of the types of artifacts that encourage players to have a bunch of creatures that have a good amount of toughness points. With the right cards on the battlefield, Colfenor's Urn becomes a valuable card in ones deck. Keep in mind that you have strong creatures in your deck.

The converted mana cost for Colfenor's Urn is three. You will need three mana of any color to bring Colfenor's Urn from your hand and onto the battlefield. For what Colfenor's Urn can do, the converted mana cost is well worth it. Keep in mind that Colfenor's Urn is an artifact. Spells and abilities that target artifacts will affect Colfenor's Urn.

What does Colfenor's Urn do in the first place?

This is something this is good if you have a treefolk deck let alone one with "Doran, the Siege Tower." Should a creature of yours with a toughness of four points or more should leave the battlefield, you get to Exile it. It is removed from the game instead of being put into the graveyard.

At the start of your end step, if three or more of those creatures are Exiled in this fashion, you sacrifice Colfenor's Urn. Those creatures return onto the battlefield.

So far, this is a good artifact. However, one can ask this: How do you get the most out of Colfenor's Urn?

One method would be using a treefolk-themed deck with Doran, the Siege Tower. When Doran, the Siege Tower is on the battlefield, creatures deal damage equal to their toughness points instead of their power points. You got a bunch of powerful attackers that get Exiled temporarily should they get killed.

Afterwards, you sacrifice Colfenor's Urn and bring those creatures back to the battlefield. But, there is still more you can do.

You should also use the legendary land called "Academy Ruins." With Academy Ruins on the battlefield, you can pay its mana ability to bring a target artifact from the graveyard back. In this respect, you can bring Colfenor's Urn back. You can cast Colfenor's Urn on the battlefield again and repeat the process. Unless an opponent sends Academy Ruins to the graveyard, you can keep bringing back and using Colfenor's Urn.

Overall, Colfenor's Urn is a good artifact card to have provided that you have creatures with toughness points of four or greater. If an opponent plays something such as "Wrath of God," your creatures should they have that amount of toughness get Exiled from the game. In this respect, you can play such a spell yourself. In this respect, it would be good for you and bad for your opponents. With the right cards, Colfenor's Urn becomes pretty useful.
