Construction paper crafts are wonderful for young children. Construction paper is inexpensive, safe, lends itself well to different shapes, adaptable and is colorful. But most of all, children can build with it. They not only build boats, houses, boxes, they can use it for flat art work as well. It works well when fastened with glue, staples or tape. Below I will show some of its versatility and uses as a crafting material for children. Mainly for children because it fades and becomes crumbly over time. For longer lasting purposes, poster boards, especially for other children are also good for crafting.

*Cone shapes and birthday hats

1. Place Mats
Materials needed
Cutting board
3 sheets of construction paper
Sharp knife (with older assistant)
Glue and cellophane tape

Construction paper is easily woven into colorful place mats and other play school decorative items. The preparation of the construction for this craft will need an adult or older sibling's assistance.

*To begin, reinforce the edges of the paper with one inch cellophane tape. This is the backside. Then place on a cutting board and draw or 1 inch vertical lines. Cut through with sharp knife. This will be the base for the woven place mat. Decide on the colors. For Christmas a red base sheet with green and red stripes will work well. Cut to 1 inch strips of green paper vertically.

* To assemble, from the backside you weave the green strips of paper under and over the red vertical strips on the base sheet. You do this from left to right or right to left. Secure the green strips with bits of tape or with glue. When finished, to cover up the backside glue on a green or white sheet of construction paper.

2. Pointed birthday hats
Materials needed
Sheet of construction paper
Pair of scissors
Cellophane tape
Hole punch

*Measure the paper horizontally. Cut through half of this length with scissors. Then turn clockwise into a cone shape. Secure with tape. Trim the lower edge with scissors. Punch a hole on each side and attach a twelve-inch piece twine or yarn on each side for ties. Decorations such as paper confetti, cutouts from construction paper etc, bits of yarn, can be added if desired.

3. Boxes, boats, houses

*Boxes or blocks or houses can be made with construction paper but need more attention than young children can maneuver alone. To get basic information on how to construct these and many, many more ideas for constructing check online. All
